Gulch - b.h. 1984 Mr. Prospector-Jameela, by Rambunctious

With a 5-for-5 record and victories in the New York's two major grade 1 races for juveniles, the Hopeful and Belmont Futurity, Gulch went West in 1986 with his eye on a Championship. His second in Oak Tree's Norfolk Stakes (G1) was followed by a fifth place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and the championship, as often happens in the two year old division, went to Capote, the Juvenile winner.

However, this son of Jameela, herself a two-time Maryland-bred Horse of the Year, would later earn his own Eclipse Award as North America's Best Sprinter after winning the 1988 Breeders' Cup Sprint following earlier victories in the Metropolitan H. (G1), which he won for the second time, the Carter H. (G1), Potrero Grande H. (G3) and a second in the Vosburgh S. (G1). Gulch's resume includes victories in Wood Memorial (G1) and Bay Shore (G3) and he placed in the Woodward S., Californian S., Whitney H., (twice), Oaklawn H., Iselin H. and Belmont, all grade 1 races.

Standing at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, Gulch is the sire of Thunder Gulch, winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont S. (G1), Travers S. (G1), Florida Derby (G1) and Swaps S. (G2) and Champion Three Year Old Colt of 1995. Gulch finished 1998 at 43rd on the Leading Sires Ranked by Earnings list with earners of $2,894,193. In 7 crops to race, others of his 25 stakes winners are Wallenda, hero of the Super Derby (G1); Harayir, victor in the Madagans One Thousand Guineas (Eng-1); and graded stakes winners Great Navigator, Golden Gear, Torrential. Approximately 84% of all Gulch's foals get to the races. His 1999 advertised stud fee is $60,000.

He was photographed outside his barn at Lane's End Farm in October 1998.
