CAPTAIN BODGIT
Kentucky Derby Favorite Captain Bodgit (Saint Ballado - Answering Echo, by Greek Answer) demonstrated his ability at a distance as a 2-year-old, winning the 1 1/8 mile Laurel Futurity (gr. III). By the time he debuted as a 3-year-old in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III), finishing third, he had caught the eye of Team Valor (Barry Irwin, president). Despite the presence of a non-threatening bowed tendon, Team Valor purchased the colt for $500,000, and the decision was promptly validated when Captain Bodgit finished third behind sensation Pulpit in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II). Captain Bodgit turned the tables on Pulpit in the Florida Derby (gr. I), blowing by all contenders in the stretch. He went to New York and won the Wood Memorial (gr. II) for good measure before taking on all comers in the Derby. Captain Bodgit made the Kentucky Derby the most exciting it had been in years as he battled Silver Charm down the stretch and just missed by a head. In the Preakness, he factored again into a thrilling stretch drive with Silver Charm and Free House, only to come in third by half a length. The courageous colt came out of the race with another tendon injury, whereupon he was retired.
