3 Year Old Dark Brown or Bay Colt Phone Trick - Evil Elaine by Medieval Man Lifetime Record: 12 10-0-1 Favorite Trick returned to his winning ways at Monmouth Park on July 19. Taking on a field of allowance class horses, Favorite Trick was expected to make short order of this field in the one mile and one-sixteenth event. The race came up a little tougher for the 1997 Horse of the Year than most expected. Favorite Trick was tested by the competition all the way around the track. He showed his courageousness by his ability to relax in between two horses that were far more imposing physically, as they dwarfed the little bay son of Phone Trick around the first turn and into the backstretch. At the top of the stretch Pat Day urged Favorite Trick to take the lead, but he didn't seem to have the punch he has exhibited in previous races. Tomorrow's Cat and Favorite Trick raced head and head down the lane until the final strides when Trick found the wire first. The road for Favorite Trick is uncertain. He may take on the top 3-year-olds in the Haskell, or perhaps he will head a different direction. Many people believe that his best asset is his speed and that asset is best applied in sprint races. We shall see in the coming months if Favorite Trick can make a place for himself and silence his critics, however, given the fact that he was being unfairly compared to Secretariat... that is not likely. He remains a favorite to follow at The Turf Online all the same. |
