Escena is bathed in the late afternoon light at Oaklawn Park as she awaits the winner's picture to be taken in the winners' circle. Escena was just shy of setting the stakes record in her Apple Blossom victory.

Escena -
5 Year Old Bay Mare
Strawberry Road*Aus-Claxton's Slew by Seattle Slew
Lifetime Record:  26 10-8-3  $1,872,639

By the end of 1997, Escena was thought by most to be a cut below her Eclipse-Award-winning stable mate, Ajina. All that has changed now. Escena is on a four-race winning streak that has taken her from Oaklawn Park to Churchill Downs and back to Hollywood Park, where she lost to Ajina in the Distaff of 1997.

The former "dream team" of Cigar are also involved with Escena. Ridden by Jerry Bailey, trained by Bill Mott and owned and bred by Allen Paulson. Even Bill Mott has no answers for the switch in form of his two female stars. Ajina has thrown in a few unenthusiastic races, while Escena is tearing up the track.

The biggest test of Escena's career will come when she faces the two hottest fillies around, Moss Flower and Relaxing Rhythm. That showdown may not occur for a while, perhaps in the Breeders' Cup Distaff in November, however, it should be a thrilling race.
