The Paddock is one of our most unique features. Each week, the voters decide who we showcase in the Paddock. The list of possible horses is below.

Chestnut Gelding - Foaled
February 21,1995 The video image shown here of Time Limit was taken at Hollywood Park on a sunny day in November, 1997. He was in the paddock for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile which he would later finish unplaced for the first time in his career. In the race, Time Limit was facing a highly talented field, but the most significant colt in the race was undefeated Favorite Trick. Time Limit had previously faced Favorite Trick (later named 1997 Horse of the Year) at Keeneland in Kentucky three weeks prior to this day and finished second. Both colts' sires were considered sprinters and Phone Trick (Favorite Trick's sire) is very well known for siring sprinter types. Favorite Trick, however, would go on to win the 1-1/16th mile race in record time and Time Limit would begin to show the signs that races over a mile were possibly a bit too far for this handsome colt of Gilded Time. |

In 1998, the most successful colt of Gilded Time's first crop, Time Limit, started off his 3-year-old campaign with an impressive win in the Spectacular Bid at Gulfstream Park. Then, just three weeks later, Time Limit held off the hard charging Coronado's Quest in the Hutcheson at Gulfstream Park to score an upset win over the highly regarded Remsen winner. Following the travel plans of Overbrook Farm's Grindstone (1996 Louisiana Derby and Kentucky Derby winner), Time Limit shipped to the Fair Grounds and raced well in the Risen Star Stakes, but finished 3rd behind Comic Strip and Captain Maestri. Convinced that the horse could stretch out, D. Wayne Lukas entered Time Limit in the Louisiana Derby, facing Comic Strip and Captain Maestri along with Nite Dreamer and Bob Baffert-trained Souvenir Copy. Once again, Time Limit tried hard as long as he could, but was unable to sustain in the stretch and faded out of contention. Having raced well at Turfway Park as a 2-year-old, Time Limit was shipped to the Kentucky track in the hopes that the Louisiana track was simply not to his liking. Lukas's plans for Time Limit in the Jeam Beam included a new strategy of laying off the pace (rather than setting the pace) hoping that would provide the colt with enough "gas in the tank" to finish the race strongly. The biggest contender for Time Limit, besides the distance of the race, would be the lightly raced, but still undefeated Seattle Slew colt, Event of the Year. Chasing after an undefeated colt was nothing new for this well-traveled chestnut colt, having faced Favorite Trick twice before as a two-year-old. There were many clouds hanging over the Jim Beam. Last year the race was tragically marred as Inexcessivelygood took a horrible spill in the final sixteenth of the race and had to be destroyed. This year, the race was postponed, which is very rare in a Triple Crown prep race. The entire day's card had to be rescheduled because a severe, yet locally isolated, thunderstorm swept through the area, taking down the power lines at the track and thus leaving the entire facility out of power for 24 hours. The horses took the track on Sunday with all eyes pointed on the flashy Event of the Year. As the horses broke from the gate, Time Limit was taken back and placed in the middle of the pack as Lukas had suggested they might, racing near Event of the Year. Yukon Pete, Yarrow Brae and Silver Launch battled on the lead setting quick fractions of 22.4 and 45.1. Time Limit was mentioned by the track announcer as the horses raced the first quarter of a mile, but then all focus was pointed toward Event of the Year as he thundered past his rivals on the far turn and charged home, drawing away by five lengths to the cheers of the crowd. I was watching this race at home and describing the events to a friend on the phone who did not have ESPN2. She was a big fan of Time Limit and was hoping that somehow he would pull off the upset and head for the Kentucky Derby. When Event of the Year crossed the finished line with such ease, we both were swept up in the moment of a Seattle Slew son heading to the Derby undefeated. My friend inquired about Time Limit's placing. I told her that he wasn't mentioned much and after the commercial, I would let her know where he finished. It is amazing how this sport can evoke such emotions of elation and then take you to the depths of sorrow in a heart beat. After the commercial, they showed a replay of Time Limit. He had fallen on the first turn and my heart sank. I knew that type of fall was very dangerous and I had to give the news to my friend over the phone. There was no official news at that time of Time Limit's fate, but the situation appeared grim and suddenly neither of us felt much like talking. Time Limit suffered a compound fracture of his left pastern and was put down a few hours later after it was determined that there was no way to save him. Let us remember Time Limit for the joy he brought to the people that loved and cared for him and to the fans that watched him give his all in every race. Without the joy that these horses bring to us, there would be very little meaning to this sport. |
