Local favorite, Banshee Breeze
(left), chasing Escena (right) near the eighth The anticipated showdown between the brilliant 3-year-old filly, Banshee Breeze, and the sensationally fast 4-year-old filly, Sharp Cat, ended when Sharp Cat was withdrawn from the Distaff due to illness. Allen Paulson's Escena was the benefactor of Sharp Cat's defection, as she assumed an easy lead with no one quick enough to challenge her early in the race. Banshee Breeze stalked the mild pace set by Escena and began to make her move as the fillies turned for home. Escena was full of run as the two charged down the stretch with Banshee Breeze inching closer and closer in a thrilling stretch drive, ending in a photo finish, with Escena finishing first by a head. |
