Here I am--looking fit and handsome at age 22--on the way to the paddock as guest of honor for the 1977 Santa Anita Derby. I won 12 of my 27 starts, but my biggest win came years earlier in another Santa Anita Derby. I was the darling of the fans and the media. The public sent me off as one of the Kentucky Derby favorites with Bill Shoemaker aboard, but the chart says I "made a brief and ineffectual bid of less than a sixteenth mile and refused to extend himself thereafter." My name became synonymous with horses who closed with a furious come-from-behind finish. At Golden Gate, a bronze plaque bears my tribute: "Out of the gate like a bullet of red, Dropping behind as the rest sped ahead, Loping along as the clubhouse fans cheer, Leisurely stalking the field in first gear."
