As we head down the road to the Triple Crown, we will be featuring some of the contenders in our Paddock. Event Of The Year is first shown walking under the lights of the indoor paddock at Bay Meadows in northern California. The second sequence of images show him in the winner's circle, receiving his El Camino Real blanket. Sired by Seattle Slew and out of a Mr. Prospector mare, this extremely well-bred 3-year-old colt has a striking resemblance to a previous winner of the Kentucky Derby who was sired by Seattle Slew, his name was Swale. Event Of The Year is undefeated in his short career. Coming into the El Camino Real, he had won a maiden race and an allowance. He had never faced a tough group of horses such as in this race, nor had he raced in a two-turn race. He put all doubts to rest by winning the race in the 3rd fastest time in history. To put this into perspective, other horses of note who have won the race are: Cavonnier (missed winning the Kentucky Derby by a nose), Tabasco Cat (winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and 2nd in the Breeders' Cup Classic), Casual Lies, Jumron and Sea Cadet. That's not bad company to keep. Look for Event Of The Year to try to extend his winning streak to four for four in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 4--televised on the FOX network, or the Jim Beam Stakes (gr. II) on March 28--televised on ESPN. |
