Santa Anita Park
- Silver Charm left for Dubai on Friday the 13th and it seems
the flight was 'charmed' from bad luck because the flight was
uneventful. He and Malek, winner of the Santa Anita Handicap
(gr.I), arrived 22 hours later on Saturday. Bob Baffert's
assistant Eoin Harty travelled with the colts. Bob Baffert will go
to Dubai on March 19.
- Silver Charm got his first feel of the track on Tuesday, March
17. The surface of the track in Dubai has been replaced and is now
considered to be one of the closest tracks to Churchill Down's
racing surface, although the times have been slower since the
replacement. Reports were that Silver Charm moved over the surface
well.
- A scope confirmed that Gentlemen bled badly following the
Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) on March 7. On a scale of 1-5, his
bleeding was a three.
- Deputy Commander came back from the New Orleans Handicap (gr.
III) sore in the hind legs. Trainer Wally Dollase said that the
Fair Grounds was the hardest track he had ever seen.
- Percutant will go next in an allowance race rather than the
San Luis Rey Stakes (gr. II).
- Exotic Wood, second in the Santa Margarita Invitational
Handicap (gr. I), will rest for a while. She is probably too tired
to go in the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I), according to trainer
Ron Ellis, but the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) remains her
number one objective.
- Elmhurst bled in the San Carlos Handicap (gr. II).
- Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron's father, Herb McCarron,
died on March 9 at the age of 76. He was off mounts all week until
he returned on Friday, March 13.
- Moonlight Meeting was injured in his stall on March 12, so he
did not make it to the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II), but is okay
now.
- Trainer Jenine Sahadi married trainer Ben Cecil on March
14.
- Madame Pandit fractured her right knee during the Las Flores
Handicap (gr. III) on February 22.
- Dramatic Gold injured his right hind leg and is turned out at
Golden Eagle Farm.
- Ernie Paragallo, owner of Artax, will donate 5% of the San
Felipe winner's future earnings to the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey
Fund in Herb McCarron's name. Chris McCarron rode Artax and helped
found the Don MacBeth Fund.
- Bienvenido is at Rancho Paseana in Southern California
recuperating from an injury.
Gulfstream Park
- Sweetsouthernsaint has a filling in his leg which kept him out
of the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. III). Trainer Leo Azpura says
it is nothing major, but if the colt is not 100%, he did not want
to run him.
- Jim McIngvale, frustrated with injuries at Gulfstream Park,
took his horses stabled there away from trainer Nick Zito and sent
them to Kentucky with Steve Moyer. Included in the trainer switch
were promising 3YOs St. Michael, Treasury, Laydown, and Solid
Wood.
